The Citadel La Ferrière is a military structure built at the beginning of the 19th century in Milot in Haiti in the Nord department, by Henri Christophe. It is the largest fortress in the Caribbean: at an altitude of 900 meters, it is located 15 km south of Cap-Haitien, within the National Historical Park - Citadel, Sans Souci, Ramiers classified as a world heritage site. UNESCO since 1982. The fortress [archive] could house a garrison of 2000 men, 5000 if necessary. The fortress was built after independence in 1804 to defend the northern part of the island of Haiti against a possible return of the French. 20,000 people took part in the construction work which lasted fourteen years. It should be noted that 2,000 of these workers died during construction. This “blood mixed with the mortar of the building” is the cause of the solidity of the Citadel, according to Haitian tourist guides. The buildings were partly destroyed by the earthquake of 1842. Reconstruction work, carried out by the Institute for the Protection of National Heritage (ISPAN) made it possible to safeguard this heritage. A plaque was placed around 1990 to remind Haitians visiting this place that King Henry I, who committed suicide on November 8, 1820 at the Palace of Sans-Souci, was buried in his Citadel. This place has an important patriotic value in the eyes of Haitians.
